Vol. 43 Nr. 6/2009 - "The livestock challenge"

Livestock farming does not have easy play in development cooperation. It gains the limelight through diseases that can also be dangerous to humans, the negative impact it brings to climate and the environment and its involvement in the destruction of the Amazon forests.

The major role of livestock farming in reducing poverty and securing food supplies is often disregarded. This is particularly evident in eco-regions where cropping is impossible. The considerable contribution working animals make to agriculture should also not be neglected.

And last not least, small livestock production can be a major source of income, especially for women.
