Emerging from holistic, eco-systems approaches to animal and human health, and driven by the avian influenza panzootic, the ''One World, One Health'' concept has provoked valuable new thinking, alliances and structures. Formulations vary, but the concept is, however, still largely exercised within an 'outbreak narrative', which emphasises distinct outbreaks, focused control, and ultimately disease elimination. Greater stress needs to be placed on the socio-ecological dynamics of disease emergence, the distributional impact of disease burdens and control, and the complexities of global health governance.
