AGRITECHNICA ASIA in Vietnam – an international success

Held in Can Tho, Vietnam at the end of August, the 20-hectare outdoor event successfully combined field demonstrations, an exhibition of agricultural machinery and a conference programme. Demonstrating solutions suitable for local farming needs in Southeast Asia, the event attracted some 4,000 farmers, traders, scientists and politicians and 80 domestic and international companies with machinery demonstrations and displays covering tillage and sowing through to harvesting and grain handling.  AGRITECHNICA ASIA Live was officially opened by Vietnam’s Minister of Agriculture.

Field demonstrations
 

The live events included machinery demonstrations and cultivation practices, such as laser-controlled land levelling, mechanised direct seeding and transplanting, rice cluster farming with precision seeding, drones for fertiliser and pesticide applications, postharvest storage, reduced storage risks and improved grain quality. 

In parallel, rice and local seed varieties were presented on trial plots, alongside crop protection solutions. The practical demonstration format allowed farmers quick and effective access to applicable modern technologies for sustainable farming.

Mechanisation in Asia
 

The series of workshops hosted by MARD and IRRI at AGRITECHNICA ASIA Live were a practical part of the Ministrie’s strategy to promote scale-appropriate mechanisation, cultivation and product processing that support sustainability in Vietnam.

IRRI’s well-attended CORIGAP Science and Lessons-Learned Seminars shared the findings from on-going research and lessons learned from the Swiss funded project “Closing Rice Yield Gaps in Asia with Reduced Environmental Footprint”. Project partners from Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Thailand presented the outputs of the project in the areas of good agricultural practices (GAP) for rice production, postharvest loss reduction, and sustainable rice production practices, including reducing the environmental footprints of rice, assessing biodiversity in rice landscapes and pathways for the agro-ecological transition to sustainable agri-food systems. 

The project has reached more than 783,000 households in the six countries over a ten year time period through cooperation with national programmes in the partner countries.

The global agricultural community will meet at AGRITECHNICA 2023 from 12-18 November 2023, in Hanover, Germany.
 
The next AGRITECHNICA ASIA & HORTI ASIA will be held from 22-24 May 2024 at BITEC in Bangkok
