GIZ is looking for rural female “Game Changers”: Graphic @ giz

Women in agriculture - call for nominations for „Game Changers”

The potential of women to make a positive contribution to rural development is enormous. However, women’s capabilities remain underappreciated. On behalf of the German government the Deutsche Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) wants to change that by looking for seven women who are bringing about lasting change. The real “game changers”.

Women are drivers of change. Their potential to make a difference in a sustainable rural development is enormous. But women in rural areas are still worse off than men in many places. The current COVID-19 pandemic might further aggravate this situation.

Nominate one “Game Changer” and you can help us find all seven

On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, GIZ invites all partners of the ONE WORLD - No Hunger initiative to honour seven women as “Game Changers – Women in Agriculture”. GIZ is looking for women who have improved the livelihoods and living environment of their communities - with innovative ideas and commitment to sustainable agriculture and rural development in the partner countries of the ONE WORLD – No Hunger initiative.

Please inform the GIZ about the pioneering women in your local development project or initiative and nominate them!

Selection of the women “Game Changers” – the Award

An international, independent jury will select the seven "Game Changers" from all nominees. The winners will be awarded the "Game Changers – Women in Agriculture" prize containing a funding package for educational or training purposes. They will have their stories told online via a unique multimedia web page, a travelling exhibition and a social media campaign.

The “Game Changers – Women in Agriculture” award aims to show the importance of supporting women for development cooperation and may even enhance its effectiveness. SDG2 (No Hunger) and SGD5 (Gender Equality) are intrinsically interlinked. With ten years left to achieve the sustainable development goals there is some success to report.

Nevertheless, women are still disadvantaged compared to men, e.g. regarding land rights and meaningful participation. They are less respected in society and, in many places, suffer from greater food insecurity than men. It is foreseeable that the corona crisis will deepen the gender gap in many countries.

How can unlocking potentials of women strengthen the effects of development cooperation in rural areas? What progress for SDG2 and rural development is possible through the targeted promotion of equality? The “Game Changers” process shall provide answers to this, as well as inspiration to rural women in our partner countries.

GIZ looks forward to meaningful nominations by 14 June 2020.

Please send any questions or nominations to the GIZ ”Sustainable Rural Areas” sector project’s team that will be happy to answer all your questions about “Game Changers – Women in Agriculture”.
