2023 edition of AgriTech Expo Zambia is most successful to date

Almost 20,000 people attended the 8th edition of AgriTech Expo Zambia from 20 to 22 April 2023 in Chisamba, Central Province. The event included demonstrations of machinery and product innovations.

AgriTech Expo Zambia is the leading agricultural trade fair in sub-Saharan Africa. It is organised by DLG Agriculture Ltd in collaboration with the Zambian National Farmers Union (ZNFU) and venue hosts Golden Valley Agricultural Research Trust (GART). Attendees included farmers and stakeholders from the Zambian agricultural sector.

The 2023 event was spread over 85,000 square metres of exhibition space. It presented small-scale, emerging and commercial farmers with the latest offerings from world-class suppliers of agriculture machinery.

The Zambian President, Hakainde Hichilema, opened the fair, along with the ministers from the departments of agriculture, livestock, SMEs and the Central Province.

The Swiss enterprise Syngenta Crop Protection AG organised a panel discussion on the first day, which looked at the role of regenerative farming in improving soil health and nutrient availability. This innovative form of agriculture can help farmers address current challenges around high fertiliser prices. In another workshop, the French firm TotalEnergies SA explained how green energies can be used on farms in Zambia.

In the networking zone of Bayer AG – a German company – top agribusiness professionals and suppliers built contacts and continued the conversation in a more relaxed environment.

Feature zones and national pavilions

AgriTech Expo Zambia 2023 offered a wide variety of feature zones, including live crop trial plots, an indoor expo, a machinery and equipment demo area, an SME and business zone, an energy park, an irrigation zone and, for the first time, a drone zone. There was also a livestock auction.

Industry suppliers showcased new seed varieties, fertilisers, agrochemicals and crop protection. They offered real-time advice and networking opportunities to farmers attending the event, and held 45 educational workshops.

The exhibition was once again international in scope, with country pavilions from Germany and the UK, and exhibitors from Botswana, China, Czechia, Israel, Jordan, South Africa and Uganda.

International suppliers demonstrated how their products and innovations could be tailored to the needs of farmers in the region. Attendees also benefited from expert-led workshops throughout the course of the fair. With a focus on small scale and emerging farmers, topics included livestock production, organic farming and crop production.
