India acted on several fronts to ensure food security of its people just before the global crisis erupted. It launched a National Food Security Mission in 2007 to augment availability of basic staples, and significantly expanded its National Rural Employment programme, perhaps the biggest in the world today, to help rural poor to have economic access to food.

 The Right to food bill is also in the offing, and together all these measures should be able to give long-term food security to Indian masses. But all these steps were taken independently of the evolving architecture of food security at the global level after the G-8 summit in L'Aquila. 

To feed the steadily growing population the Indian government started a Second Green Revolution in eastern India in 2010, an area with sufficient arable land and abundant water resources.
