Migration and remittances - the case of Honduras

Catacamas is a rural region in eastern Honduras that, like the rest of the country, has changed dramatically because of the exodus and through remittances by migrants to their families. The money sent from abroad is primarily spent on food, but many recipients also invest in the education of their family members. Remittances are also frequently used by the migrants to buy property and houses in their homeland. Though desirable, productive investments in small businesses are still rare. GTZ and DED have hence advised the local chamber of commerce in Catacamas to create incentives and informational materials for the productive investment of remittances.
