Innovative agricultural technologies and approaches are needed to feed a growing world population. This is particularly true in view of the effects of climate change. The largest potential for productivity increases exists with small-scale farmers in developing countries. But how can small farmers best benefit from innovative approaches and technologies? The German government-funded Sustainable Agriculture Information Network (Sustainet) analysed 39 successful best-practice projects of sustainable agriculture in India, Kenya/Tanzania and Peru/Bolivia. Based on the results, a scaling-up assessment tool (ScalA) was developed that can be used to elaborate scaling-up strategies for best practices in sustainable agriculture tailored to small-scale farms.
