Using examples, this article illustrates how three different types of social entrepreneurs - policy, programme and business entrepreneurs - have supported the implementation of technological, institutional and policy innovations to help the rural poor. Based on these examples, it draws lessons for rural development and stresses the importance of continued support and scaling-up of social entrepreneurship and innovation in the developing world.
