WorldRiskReport

The 2018 WorldRiskReport is dedicated to “Child Protection and Children’s Rights”. It includes the WorldRiskIndex indicating 172 countries risk getting hit by an extreme natural event leading to a disaster.

This year’s edition of the annual WorldRiskReport which focuses on “Child Protection and Children’s Rights” and was published by Bündnis Entwicklung Hilft and the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) of Ruhr University Bochum in November 2018.

A major finding of the report is that during disaster resulting from extreme natural events such as earthquakes and cyclones, children are particularly at risk of physical injury and death. The authors point out that in the chaos following natural disasters, the rights of young people guaranteed in the Convention on the Rights of the Child are often neglected to the point of criminality.

A key part of the report is dedicated to the WorldRiskIndex 2018, which indicates the risk for 172 countries where an extreme natural event may lead to a disaster. The calculation formula takes into account a country’s exposure towards natural hazards and its societal vulnerability.

The disaster-risk hotspot regions are located in Oceania, Southeast Asia, Central America, and West and Central Africa. Vanuatu is the country with the highest disaster risk, Tonga is in second place and the Philippines are in third place.  Of the 15 countries with the highest risk, nine are island nations and of the 15 countries with the highest societal vulnerability, 13 are on the African continent. The countries with the lowest disaster risk are Saudi Arabia, Malta and Qatar.

The WorldRiskIndex was developed in collaboration with the United Nations University’s Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS).
