The Little Sustainable Landscapes Book

The notion of a “landscape approach” is not new, but in recent years, it has gained in importance and is a major topic of national and international policy discourse. “The Little Sustainable Landscapes Book” aims to clarify and disseminate sustainable landscape management methods, and to catalyse their implementation across private and public sectors world-wide.

The book summarises current developments in landscape management, makes recommendations on policy, and explains the importance of landscape initiatives in achieving global goals related to sustainable development. First of all, a framework chapter gives definitions of “sustainable landscapes” and “integrated landscape management” and relates them to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Then world-wide trends in integrated landscape management are presented, and the combination of five elements that the authors believe are important in implementation is explained: a multi-stakeholder platform, shared understanding, collaborative planning, effective implementation and monitoring. The final chapter is devoted to the catalysts for sustainable landscapes: finance, governance and markets. All chapters contain numerous case studies to illustrate the issues they address.

The book has been produced in collaboration between the Global Canopy Programme (GCP), EcoAgriculture Partners, the Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
