The Food Systems Countdown Report 2024

Food systems are facing immense challenges. Malnutrition is widespread, many food-related jobs offer low wages and poor working conditions, and the environmental burden of food production threatens planetary health. This report measures, assesses and tracks the performance of global food systems towards 2030.

The Food Systems Countdown Report 2024, published by the Food Systems Countdown Initiative in January 2024 shows that progress toward food systems transformation is occurring.

The Food Systems Countdown Initiative aims to monitor the state of food systems transformation through relevant data, independent of any established monitoring processes. Such monitoring can help align decision-makers around key priorities, incentivise action, hold stakeholders accountable, sustain commitment by demonstrating progress and enable course corrections.

The Global Food Systems Initiative is producing annual publications to measure, assess and track the performance of global food systems towards 2030 and the conclusion of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Report presents the Countdown indicators depicting the current state of national food systems. In doing so, it provides a starting point for future work to identify where things can be done better, provide ideas for how to get there, and inspire stakeholders (in particular, policy-makers) that progress can and must be made.

Policy-makers must reinforce the progress toward food systems transformation where it has occurred and refocus energy where it has not – while remaining aware that each element of the food system interacts with other elements. Progress requires a holistic approach that leverages these interconnections to drive transformative change.
