Best-bet innovations for adaptation in agriculture
The working paper 10 best-bet innovations for adaptation in agriculture: A supplement to the UNFCCC NAP Technical Guidelines was published in April 2018 by the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS).
The authors describe ten innovations that can spur an agricultural transformation and help countries to achieve the outcomes they want for their National Adaptation Plans (NAPs). According to them, these innovations are appropriate to adapt to the impacts of climate change while sustaining productivity and delivering co-benefits including for environmental sustainability, nutrition and livelihoods.
Best-bet practices for innovations for adaptation in agriculture are:
1. Agroforestry
2. Aquaculture
3. Stress- tolerant varieties
4. Improving smallholder dairy
5. Alternate wetting and drying in rice systems
6. Solar-powered irrigation
7. Digital agriculture
8. Climate-informed advisories
9. Weather index-based agricultural insurance
10. Blended finance
According to the authors, this paper aims to provide guidance for implementers in terms of costs and benefits, suitable geographies, timeframes for implementation and approaches to monitoring and evaluating results from these innovations.
