CIFOR and Mongabay launch partnership
The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), a scientific organisation that researches ways to better manage and preserve the planet’s tropical forests, and Mongabay, a leading environmental reporting platform dedicated to raising awareness globally about social and environmental issues related to tropical forests, have launched a partnership to increase the dissemination of news about the status of the world’s forest ecosystems.
Both organisations are committed to communicating scientific research and improving the capacity of journalists and investigators to report on forest conservation. The new agreement, covering a period of two years, is aimed at building awareness of the crucial relationship between forests and people across the globe. The two organisations will complement each other’s activities by producing original reports and news about forests and conservation, expanded participation in CIFOR events and webinars and professional training opportunities for Mongabay’s network of journalists.
The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) advances human well-being, equity and environmental integrity by conducting innovative research, developing partners’ capacity, and actively engaging in dialogue with all stakeholders to inform policies and practices that affect forests and people. CIFOR is a CGIAR Research Center that leads the CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA). The role of forests in coping with climate change is one of the key issues in CIFOR’s work. Other themes it addresses include how food security and biodiversity relate to one another as well as tackling the Ebola virus threat. CIFOR is also the lead organiser of the Global Landscapes Forum, an international movement centring on landscapes and the communities living in them.
Mongabay is a non-profit environmental reporting platform whose mission is to raise awareness globally about social and environmental issues relating to tropical forests and other ecosystems. Mongabay currently does original reporting in English, Spanish, and Indonesian. Areas that Mongabay focuses on include deforestation for oil palm plantations in rainforests, the potential of mangroves to store carbon and the conservation of endangered species such as the Chinese giant salamander.
