Gender mainstreaming in agricultural supply chains

Woman play an important, though often invisible, role in agriculture. This publication aims to provide guidance to foster gender equality and women’s empowerment in agricultural supply chains.

The knowledge product Gender mainstreaming in agricultural supply chains can accelerate good growth: What works and for whom? was developed under the United Nations Good Growth Partnership’s Adaptive Management & Learning project and published the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in February 2020.

It seeks to underline and stress the added value of using a gender lens in the design and implementation of activities in agricultural supply chains, and reflects on current trends in gender mainstreaming, opportunities to accelerate action, and critical lessons-learned from initiatives that have already been implemented.

Presenting a clear business case for gender equality and women’s empowerment in agricultural supply chains, it aims to be a useful guidance on gender mainstreaming to stakeholders involved in commodity-related projects.

The authors identify five gender related core issues:

  • Gender segregation of roles and opportunities.
  • Limited and unequal livelihood opportunities and alternatives.
  • Unequal access to and control of inputs, training and resources.
  • Unequal burden of care and unpaid labour.
  • Unequal participation in decision-making on appropriate actions and goals for the entire supply chain or a specific element of the supply chain.
