The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has signed a further financing agreement over 30 million euro for the “Forest Carbon Partnership Facility” of the World Bank. The aim of the initiative is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the destruction of the forests. “Germany is supporting those countries that have actively and self-responsibly embarked on a course towards more climate protection with proof given of the efforts they themselves have made,” says Development Minister Dirk Niebel. “Here, the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) is a central instrument with which developing countries, donors, businesses and civil society are jointly creating international standards on how forest conservation and climate protection can be effectively implemented and rewarded at local level.”

Germany is co-initiator of the initiative, which now has 18 donors and 37 developing countries that have committed themselves to combating forest destruction and degradation in the developing countries. Measures are aimed at effectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the loss of biodiversity. Internationally, the approach is establishing itself as REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). According to the BMZ, with a total of 84 million euro, Germany is the largest donor to the FCPF.
